INTERVIEW // ADAM FREELAND

A week and a half ago, Adam Freeland visited the Czech Republic for the fourth time and played a great set at the Breaksome night at Roxy, Prague. Of course we couldn't miss it and so we have asked him a few questions in cooperation with our break brothers from the Breakbeat.cz website. You'll find the first half of the interview on our site, the second part is at Breakbeat.cz. So if you wanna know something about the Marine Parade label or why Adam remixed Nirvana, click on the heading!

Adam and IHow are you doing?

Good, yeah! Allright!

You've been here for three times already… How do you like it in the CR, how do you like playing here?

I like it, that's why I keep coming back. Good crowd, nice people, a beautiful place.

How different is it from the UK?

It's different, very…

How big is the breakbeat scene over there?

About that big… :)) (shows a space of about a foot between his hands)

Well,ok :) But compared to the DnB scene, for example…

It's not as big as drumandbass, but it's growing all the time, you know, it's a lot bigger than it was and I think it's taking over from like, progressive house and things like that.

How's your label, Marine Parade, doing?

It's doing very good, we just put out my artist album and we've got the Evil 9 album coming up, we've got a lot of new releases at the moment, new stuff from ILS.

Can you tell me something about Evil 9 and their new album?

It's gonna be fucking great. It's gonna be really strong I think. I'm really excited about it, they just have their totally own sound and I think, like, what Shadows album was to the hip-hop scene, the Evil 9 album's gonna be to the breakbeat scene.

What hardware/software did you use when making your own album?Adam and I

Logic.

Just Logic?

No, but I sequenced in Logic…

Why do you like guitars in breakbeat so much? Do you think that the future for the music is in merging with live music?

I think so. I've had enough of nu-school breaks with bad synthesizer noises going „wah, wah, wah“ , I'm kind of fed up with that, it's not original anymore. I'm not just using conventional guitars, I'm twisting them. Actually I'm not using many guitars but I'm using those frequencies which sound like guitars.

And how did you actually get the idea to remix Nirvana?

I was trying to do a bootleg, a combination of Nirvana and Fisherspooner, 'cause they have the same keychanges, but it didn't work. But I was chopping up Nirvana and it was sounding good. I was actually in the mountains snowed in  in America and there was so much snow I couldn't leave my hotel, all I had was my laptop and a downloaded mp3, chopped it up and made this remix.

Two weeks ago Ed Rush played here and he told us, that his remix of We Want Your Soul wouldn't have been made if you hadn't met in some hotel, somewhere…

Did he play it?

Yeah…he played it…Do you often agree with people on making remixes in hotels? :) Or how does this happen?

Well, I haven't had many tracks to remix, so, no, but I met him a few times and we got on and we talked abou it…

Are you in regular contact with people who make DnB?

Yeah, Krust and Die just remix my next single, Supernatural. That's really good…

Adam FreelandDo you think that music should present any kind of an idea or should it just be for fun?

Both!

Who's idea was the wewantyoursoul.com website?

Mine! :)

Did you make the remix of Idiotheque from Radiohead?

No, Evil 9 did that.

They did? Do you know how that came about?

They just wanted to do it. It's a good track. They played the bass live on it and stuff…
